Being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) as a college student presents major challenges, including loss of the familiar support system, adapting to erratic schedules, unhealthy eating, peer pressure associated with college life, managing erratic blood sugar, and the struggle to balance social life with constant self-care, often leading to feelings of being different or overwhelmed.

Add to that the challenges of playing collegiate football and balancing intense physical demands and their impact on glycemic control, and the mental burden on self-care, nutrition, and team dynamics, requiring planning and support.

This program will provide information and insight from a college athlete's perspective who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes during his academic and athletic career. We will review the biopsychosocial aspects of the diagnosis and management strategies, lessons learned, and strategies for how healthcare providers can effectively serve this population.

Activity description: Learners will have an increased understanding of the biopsychosocial challenges and management strategies for college Division I athletes living with Type 1 diabetes.

Target audience: This activity is designed for individuals or groups of diabetes care and education specialists including Nurses, Dietitians, Pharmacists, and other health care providers interested in staying up to date on current practices of care for people with diabetes and other related conditions.

Griffin Duggan is a graduate of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and earned his Bachelor's degree in Public Relations from Virginia Tech and a Master's in Sports Management at Old Dominion University.

He was rated as a three-star football recruit and the 48th-best player in Virginia by 247Sports Composite. While attending Virginia Tech, he was confronted with the diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes and is committed to sharing his story to benefit the diabetes community.
