Description

Enrolling, engaging, and retaining people with prediabetes and diabetes in DSMES services and the National DPP lifestyle change program is a persistent challenge for care teams—made more difficult when community members face health-related social needs that affect health literacy, referrals, and program completion. This two-part series introduces design thinking as a practical approach to strengthen engagement and retention. Participants will learn to empathize with community members, define core issues, brainstorm solutions, and quickly test prototypes. Between sessions, teams will apply design thinking to their own health center’s challenges and return to set goals for prototyping, testing, and refining solutions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Understand benefits of design thinking for community health
  • Describe how design thinking principles can be utilized to address enrollment, engagement, and retention in DSMES services and National DPP lifestyle change programs for those facing health-related social needs challenges
  • Apply the design thinking process to empathize with community members, ideate solutions, and prototype offerings to rapidly test ideas with community members
  • Identify next steps for prototyping, testing, and refining strategies to improve engagement and retention within participants’ own health centers
