ADCES Receives Continued CMS Approval as an Accrediting Organization for Diabetes Self-Management Training Programs

Oct 21, 2021, 13:49 PM

By Jasmine Burleson, Diabetes Education & Prevention Programs Administrator

The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (ADCES) application for continued recognition as a national accrediting organization (AO) for entities that facilitate outpatient diabetes education to Medicare beneficiaries has been reapproved. A review of the ADCES AO application by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) found the ADCES accreditation standards and process to be consistent with the NSDSMES standards and the CMS requirements. This renewal was awarded by CMS on September 27, 2021 and is effective through September 27, 2027.

In order to become a NAO, the organization must meet the standards and requirements of the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services under 42 CFR part 410, subpart H to qualify and be considered for accrediting authority. The NAO must also provide assurance that their approval requirements are at least as rigorous as those of the CMS.

ADCES prepared a detailed application with documentation of all aspects of our oversight of ADCES Diabetes Education Accreditation Program (DEAP) processes, including initial and renewal applications, auditor training and virtual audits of DSMES services, policies and procedures, as well as a deep dive into ADCES’ new virtual audit process.  The documentation involved an application or more than 150 pages in addition to interviews with the CMS Quality, Safety & Oversight Group. The entire process spanned 8 months and provided valuable insights and guidance to the DEAP team.

ADCES is honored to be renewed for another six-year period as an accrediting organization for diabetes self-management programs. This continued approval will allow ADCES to continue to support and grow DSMES services across the country.
