Why did I choose to become board certified in Advanced Diabetes Management (aka a BC-ADM)? Certainly not because I was looking forward to another exam! Although preparing for the BC-ADM exam did give me a chance to really organize and define my knowledge in a new way...
My main reason for pursuing the BC-ADM certification was to help my patients. But wait, I hear you asking - how do some extra letters on your business card help patients? If you have the knowledge, why does it matter? As a nurse practitioner, I already had prescriptive and diagnostic authority, so what difference did it make?
Let me ask you this - how do your patients find you? Or how do the members of their healthcare team know to send them to you? Some of my patients come to me because I have established relationships with their primary care providers. But many find me because they or their providers are looking for a diabetes expert and find the BC-ADM credential.
We all know that diabetes is complex to manage, and the options are only growing. Patients need expert care to maintain their best quality of life, long term. Providers are overwhelmed by the changing options and the sheer intensity of treatment that is often for these patients. Both need to know how to find a reliable, evidence-based resource for the management they need.
Think of the BC-ADM credential as a flashing neon sign that raises your practice and expertise above the noise. There is a lot of misinformation and confusion about diabetes out there. This nationally recognized certification demonstrates a commitment to patient safety and outcomes.
