Time For a Deep(er) Dive Into Diabetes Technology

May 9, 2022, 08:00 AM

By Gary Scheiner MS, CDCES, 2014 Diabetes Educator of the YearGary Scheiner

It’s been three years since we met face-to-face to discuss the latest and greatest in the field of diabetes care and education. A lot has happened since then, particularly in the technology space. Some of the new and exciting developments include:

  • Smartphone apps to support everything from lifestyle modification to insulin dose calculations.
  • Software that combines data from multiple devices and gleans meaningful insights.
  • Innovative continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems with features for select populations.
  • Hybrid closed loop systems that automate many aspects of insulin delivery.
  • DIY algorithms that are competing with commercial versions in performance and popularity.
  • “Smart” insulin pens that can calculate and track insulin doses.
  • Inpatient monitoring systems that have the potential to alleviate staff burden.

As diabetes care and education specialists, it is our job to understand these technologies so that we can counsel our clients appropriately. Whether you consider yourself a novice or an expert, ADCES22 has just what you need to take your tech skills to the next level. In addition to visiting the booths of the various device manufacturers (believe me, they would LOVE to see you and share all they have to share!), be sure to take advantage of the educational sessions. This year’s conference features nearly two dozen sessions that focus on technology – everything from basic device downloading to analysis of CGM data to an in-depth look at the various hybrid closed-loop algorithms.

Work in primary care? There are sessions for you. See mostly people with type 2 diabetes? There are sessions for you. Love to surround yourself with charts and graphs? Guess what? There are sessions for you, too.

Attending ADCES22 and enhancing your tech skills is more than just an opportunity. It is a responsibility. Don’t let your clients down! See you at ADCES22.
