Everything you need to become a great educator

In four jam-packed days at the Annual Meeting, we have access to everything we need become a great educator. I think the educational sessions are where we really have the opportunity to be inspired and grow.
This year's concurrent breakout sessions are organized into educational tracks: Business/Emerging Models, Cultural Disparities, Disease Management, and Latest Technology. Each session is categorized by knowledge of the educator on the topic, from advanced beginner to expert. You might be an expert in an area of diabetes management but struggle with new technology. So...you might choose a session on technology that is for the advanced beginner.
I went to a fantastic talk yesterday on Best Practices in Presentation Skills. I have many new ideas for professional presentations. Getting the word out about what we offer is essential to get patients and referral sources. Would shared medical appointments fit into your practice? There are talks that bring us into 2011 and beyond with exposure to practice environments, diabetes websites, and new technology. There are talks about working with people from different cultures, updates on medications, how to motivate patients, and on complications of diabetes.
Are you a dietitian who wants to learn more about exercise; a nurse wanting the latest information on medications; a pharmacist who would like an update on pumps; or an exercise expert that wants to learn about meal planning? This is a great way to gain information on those “other” areas of diabetes education. Each year I attend, I go to some presentations outside of my area. This is my way to grow as an educator, a professional, and a person.
If you are here in Vegas this week, I hope you are finding many ways to grow personally and professionally. Is there a talk you attended that you loved? Is there something you are really looking forward to? What has been your favorite session or event? What is missing from the program that could be considered for next year?
If you are not here this year, think about planning (and start saving!) for Indianapolis in 2012. Attending Annual Meeting is a wonderful opportunity to become a great educator!
