Evidence-based Lifestyle Change Programs to Prevent or Delay the Onset of Type 2 Diabetes

Prediabetes & the CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program

96 million American adults—more than 1 out of 3—have prediabetes

Diabetes Prevention and Prediabetes

Having prediabetes means blood glucose levels are higher than normal—but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Prediabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

The National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%. For people over 60 years of age, the program can reduce the risk by 71%.

A Model of Care That Works

The National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) is a partnership of organizations working to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes by offering an evidence-based lifestyle change program. The program is based on the Diabetes Prevention Program research study, which showed modest behavior changes helped individuals with prediabetes lose 5% to 7% of their body weight and reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

ADCES' Work in Prevention

ADCES has been contributing to the overall sustainability of the National DPP by working with a nationwide network of programs that are offering the lifestyle change program within their local communities. Since 2012, ADCES has been able to expand access to and reimbursement for people at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Expanding the National DPP

ADCES has been awarded a 5-year funding opportunity to bring the National DPP to underserved populations with little or no access to diabetes prevention services. This is ADCES’ second consecutive opportunity to work with the CDC on scaling the National DPP.
