The delicacies are often homemade, so the estimated carb content of each helping is as unique as the dish from which it was scooped! The holiday season is here! Halloween is behind us and Thanksgiving is right around the corner. It’s several weeks of celebration, events and gatherings with family and friends — and lots of food and drink. Of course, people with diabetes can and should take part in the fun and festivities, but a plan will make sure they can have fun while being mindful of their diabetes management.

Natural disasters can be particularly hazardous for those living with diabetes. The aftermath can leave survivors without food, water, clothes, shelter, power and medical supplies for days or even weeks. For a person with diabetes, the biggest possible risks during an emergency include not having medications or insulin, dehydration (which can lead to huge jumps in blood sugar) and lack of food available when blood sugars drop. However, being prepared can help reduce the chances of a possible life-threatening situation.
