Article from The Science of Diabetes Self-Management and Care Journal: Development of a Diabetes Education Video Series in American Sign Language for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Populations (April 2025 Issue)
By Allyson S. Hughes, PhD; and Julia Blanchette, PhD, RN, BC-ADM, CDCES
Litchman et al., 2025 developed the first comprehensive DSMES video series in American Sign Language (ASL) that is culturally and linguistically tailored for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) communities. The video series is grounded in a design thinking framework and co-created with a DHH community advisory board. The video topics included all ADCES7 diabetes self-management behaviors while addressing culturally tailored nutrition and DHH self-advocacy and communication. The deliberate use of ASL-first design, visual aids, voiceover, and captioning exemplifies a multimodal accessibility strategy that embodies both language access and language justice. This work not only addresses a critical gap in diabetes education but also models an inclusive, community-engaged approach that can be adapted across other chronic conditions and underserved populations.
