The Clinician, Non-Diabetes Care and Education Specialist
Certificate Program is geared towards clinical staff that are not DCESs but want
to become more familiar with treating people with diabetes and the ADCES
competencies. The certificate program incorporates content on the clinical aspects of diabetes, as well as aspects of self-care such as healthy eating, healthy coping, medications, and problem solving.
Learning Objectives
After successfully completing this program, the learner will be able to:
• Apply ADA Standards of Care to support individualized, team-based management of people with diabetes across the lifespan.
• Assess patients with diabetes using a structured framework, ADCES7, to identify self-management needs, barriers, and appropriate referrals.
• Integrate lifestyle, psychosocial, and behavior-change strategies into patient-centered diabetes care plans.
• Apply principles of glucose-lowering therapy and monitoring to support safe, effective, and goal-directed diabetes management.
• Identify and implement strategies to prevent and manage acute and chronic diabetes-related complications.

Intended Audience
This application-based activity is designed for clinicians on the diabetes care team who interact with people with diabetes and related conditions, but whose primary focus is not diabetes. This includes, but is not limited to, physicians, PAs, NPs, APRNs, registered nurses (RN), registered dietitian nutritionists (RDN), pharmacists, and other similar roles.

Certificate of Completion
Upon completion of the program, you will receive a Certificate of Program Completion. The certificate provides recognition for your continuing education efforts and demonstrates your initiative in acquiring additional training in diabetes self-management education. The certificate program can be used to set minimum training standards for DSMES program staff. The certificate program also is used by healthcare providers who are not looking for a career in diabetes care and education, but who find that they and/or their staff need more training in diabetes due to the increasing number of people with diabetes being seen in their practice.
Access Period
You will have access to this learning activity for a period of six months after you enroll, or whenever the activity's CE credits expire (whichever comes first).
