Omnipod 5

The Omnipod 5 App is a part of the Omnipod 5 Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) System. People can use the app on the Omnipod controller or their compatible Smartphone.

The Omnipod 5 System includes the app, the Dexcom G6 CGM and the Pod. The Omnipod 5 App can control the Pod, a tubeless insulin holder that attaches to the user’s body. A signal from the Omnipod 5 App — or glucose readings from the Dexcom G6 — triggers the Pod to release insulin.

  • Speak with your patient before setting a glucose target. Do they have fears of lows at night? Are they fearful of highs? Set different glucose targets at different times.
  • If the patient is having severe fluctuations, set a higher target such as 130mg/dL until the glucose levels even out.
  • Turn off reverse correction when in automated insulin delivery mode.
  • Try treating a mild hypoglycemia alarm with 5-10 gram, you may not need 15 grams of fast-acting glucose as the algorithm is already decreasing insulin.
  • Focus on making changes to carbohydrate ratios and targets. The sensitivity is not as relevant since the algorithm is adjusting.
  • Remember to adjust basal rates for when the individual is in manual mode.
  • Before switching to the Omnipod 5 app, be sure the controller has been uploaded, and all settings are available.  When completing the app setup, have the user view the Reminders page that includes the Confidence Reminders and Program Reminders.  If they do not want alerts pre and post boluses and with temporary basals, they should turn them off.
  • If switching devices with the app, remind the person that the current adaptivity of the algorithm will not be transferred over – expect the algorithm to be more conservative with the first couple pod changes.  Encourage delivering correction doses if glucose levels are higher than expected.
  • Review the Custom Foods link of the app – if the person with diabetes states that carb counting is challenging or they have caregiver or school nurse who helps with their meal input and they eat the same foods often, help them create at least one custom food/meal for each meal and snack they eat.

Extra Pearl:  Encourage the person with diabetes to connect to your office portal before they leave as it will help to save time at follow-up visits and allow you to support them between visits.

Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) is structured around seven diabetes self-care behaviors, known as the ADCES7 Self-Care Behaviors®. Diabetes care and education specialists can help you set priorities and work with you on improving your own management in each of the following areas:

  • Taking Medication - Adhering to prescribed medication in terms of timing, dosage, frequency, and duration.
  • Monitoring - Tracking data influencing diabetes outcomes.
  • Problem Solving - Identifying and solving issues for better diabetes outcomes.

Users must operate the Omnipod 5 App on the provided controller or a compatible Android device. An active Bluetooth connection between the device running the app and the Pod is required.

For successful use, the Omnipod 5 App must:

  • get regular updates to the latest version of the app
  • have specific smartphone settings enabled (recommended Android settings)
  • stay within 5 feet of the Pod to restore a lost Bluetooth® connection.

Is Omnipod 5 Safe and Secure?

The Omnipod 5 App requires login authentication to secure communication with the Pod. All communication between the Pod and the app is encrypted. A verification system ensures only the Omnipod 5 App can connect to the Pod. These measures safeguard the app, Pod and cloud communication from security threats.
