Insulin has come a long way since its development over a century ago. Yet, insulin still remains the standard of care for people with type 1 diabetes, as well as a treatment option for people with other types of diabetes. This session will review the current insulin products available, dosing and titration protocols, monitoring parameters, and medication education. Additionally, pipeline insulin products and current therapy trends will be discussed.
Learners should be able to distinguish between the various basal and bolus insulin products available, including the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. In addition, the learner should be able to develop an appropriate insulin therapy regimen for individual persons with diabetes and determine optimal titration process. Lastly, the learner should be able to outline upcoming insulin products and adjunct medication therapies to an existing insulin regimen.
At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
-- Compare the currently available insulin products, including their pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) parameters.
-- Explain appropriate insulin administration technique, product storage, and expiration.
-- Describe standard and adjunctive pharmacotherapy management of people with type 1 diabetes.
