Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, participants will be better able to:

• Describe the novel mechanisms of action and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic properties of once-weekly basal insulins and how this differs from traditional once-daily basal insulins
• Apply emerging efficacy and safety data on once-weekly basal insulins to develop individualized treatment plans for patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D)
• Integrate Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist services into the care of patients with T2D on basal insulin
• Implement patient-centered basal insulin regimens treatment plans for patients with T2D, applying best practices for initiation, dosing, and titration to optimize glycemic outcomes and patient self-management

Intended Audience

This activity is designed for US-based health care professionals, in particular CDCESs involved in the care of people with T2D requiring basal insulin therapy but who are not achieving glycemic targets with their current treatment regimens.

To satisfy the requirements for renewal of certification for the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE), continuing education activities must be diabetes related and approved by a provider on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers (www.cbdce.org). CBDCE does not approve continuing education. The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers.

Board Certified Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM)

CBDCE is the administering body for the Advanced Diabetes Management credentials. Continuing education programs offered by ADCES can be used toward fulfilling BC-ADM Certification and recertification requirements.
