Description

Explore how artificial intelligence is shaping diabetes care and education, from foundational concepts to practical clinical applications. This session will review generative AI and large language models, discuss real-world use cases for clinicians, and examine key considerations related to HIPAA, accuracy, bias, equity, and clinical safety. Speakers will also demonstrate an AI-supported nutrition use case and highlight the role of subject matter experts, human oversight, and cross-functional collaboration in building safe, effective tools for practice. Attendees will leave with practical strategies for evaluating and using AI responsibly in diabetes education settings.

Learning Outcome

As a result of this activity, participants will self-report increased confidence in using generative AI responsibly and effectively in diabetes care, education, and professional practice.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
• Define generative AI and large language models. 
• Identify at least one AI-supported use cases to use in your own practice or organization.  
• Describe the role of subject matter expert vs. AI judge in AI tool monitoring.

Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB)  As a Jointly Accredited Organization, the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive 1.0 general continuing education credit(s).

Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists

To satisfy the requirements for renewal of certification for the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE), continuing education activities must be diabetes related and approved by a provider on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers (www.cbdce.org). CBDCE does not approve continuing education. The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers.

Board Certified Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM)

CBDCE is the administering body for the Advanced Diabetes Management credentials. Continuing education programs offered by ADCES can be used toward fulfilling BC-ADM Certification and recertification requirements.
