2026 Insulin Pharmacotherapy Update: Insulin's Place in Diabetes Management

Description

The purpose of this activity is to enable the learner to understand the various types of insulin currently available for managing diabetes, including insulins pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Using case-based applications, the learner will apply their knowledge to formulate person-center insulin treatment plans for people with diabetes from a variety of populations and social determinants of health. Cases will focus on approaches to optimal insulin management, including how and when to add, continue or deprescribe insulin. 

Learning Outcome

Learners will report increased confidence in evaluating and applying insulin therapy strategies for people with diabetes, including comparing basal and bolus insulin products, identifying insulin's role in diabetes management, and making individualized therapeutic decisions related to initiating, continuing, adjusting, or deprescribing insulin across diverse patient populations and social determinants of health.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

• Discuss insulin's place in therapy in diabetes management.
• Compare the various basal and bolus insulin products available for diabetes management.
• Apply appropriate therapeutic decision making when continuing, adding or deprescribing insulin therapy for people with diabetes and related conditions.

Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. To satisfy the requirements for renewal of certification for the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE), continuing education activities must be diabetes related and approved by a provider on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers (www.cbdce.org). CBDCE does not approve continuing education. The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers.

Board Certified Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM)

CBDCE is the administering body for the Advanced Diabetes Management credentials. Continuing education programs offered by ADCES can be used toward fulfilling BC-ADM Certification and recertification requirements.
